About Spargo Transport The family business commenced operations in road transport in the 1930's when the late Gus Spargo commenced transporting livestock, from his base in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, 55kms from the Melbourne 's GPO. The surrounding district was a rich area for the production of cattle and sheep and within easy distance to the markets. In 1966, Graeme was approached by a customer and asked if he would diversify his business to transporting general freight, of which we still carry their products today, 39 years later. This direction led towards the expansion of the fleet which included local and interstate deliveries. In 1970 Graeme made the decision to concentrate on the increasing growth of general freight and exited the livestock side of his business. The opportunity arose to diversify locally in 1979 Graeme purchased an Owner Operator retiring from business and in doing so, started a move into the transport of bulk wood chips to the CSR site in Bacchus Marsh. In 1989 CSR rationalised their production and closed the plant and woodchips were then transported to Geelong for export to Japan . Innovative equipment was purchased to improve efficiency, leading to more specialized areas of bulk transport and walking floor trailers were purchased in the early 1990,s due to the safe unloading of products and an ability to unload anywhere, anytime. In 2005 a decision was made to divest our interests in woodchip transport due to environmental government policy in forest management, resulting in the closure of some sawmills. Some firsts for the company included the first aluminium floor trailers, airbag suspensions with weight gauges for axle weight accuracy, 45 foot, 22 plt Trailers under permit and all introduced to gain the benefits immediately, due to the competitive nature of road transport. By the mid 1990's, after coming through the recession and being in a strong financial position, the old depot in central Bacchus Marsh had been outgrown and 40 acres was purchased just minutes outside Bacchus Marsh with plans to purpose build and with room for expansion in the future. Graeme's second daughter Kathryn joined the company in 1992 and quickly adapted to the task of administration, and was instrumental in developing the office facilities at the new depot and in implementing new computer systems and software. In 1997 the business interests of a small fleet operator were purchased and opened the door for further expansion for the business with cartage to Adelaide for a major paper company. In November 2004 the purchasing of a local business in Adelaide, South Australia was to diversify our business with local container cartage with sideloaders and skels, with unpack and warehousing facilities , as well as a depot to operate the interstate transport from. |
